The University of New Brunswick's Student Union Building Cafeteria Expansion required a 5000 Sq. Ft. addition to a Victorian building in the centre of campus. The design challenge was to provide a highly functional state-of-the-art facility to accommodate the growing need for space and efficiency while at the same time being sensitive to the existing architecture. A second requirement was to relocate several existing functions so that additional expansions could take place in the future with a minimum of disruption. Doubling the seating capacity inside, the design also added a rooftop patio, an outdoor plaza, a food and beverage receiving and storage area, an elevator, offices and increased washroom facilities. The existing building was renovated to meet the most recent code requirements for fire protection, exiting and barrier free standards.
